While the government is pushing for technology in healthcare for reasons of cost containment and improved quality of care, consumers will be demanding technology in healthcare to gain immediate access to medical information. Electronic medical records, personal health records, and other integrated technologies can greatly improve the availability of medical information for both healthcare providers and patients, and it will ultimately improve healthcare delivery and health outcomes if it is used appropriately. Technology truly supports the patient-centered medical home model, and will enhance care coordination and participatory medicine.
