If a large dataset of clinical support decision rules were to be constructed, then alot of mistakes could potentially be avoided. My only concern with that is you're turning healthcare into a machine and you loose the personal touch and experience that a seasoned physician brings to the patient. Sometimes that "gut" feeling about what something is can save the patients life, where as if the physician followed the recommended path of treatment, or tests, the patient may not have made it the whole way through before the real issue was found.

Good questions. I believe having social media embraced by hospital staff is perfect idea. If doctors, nurses and physicians are too busy to engage patients online, then they should employ someone to assist in managing social media.

I just listed your blog in http://www.mhealthtalk.com/link/blogs/. I wrote about solutions for home healthcare and aging-in-place and am always looking for byline authors and people willing to republish my own articles, with full attribution of course, including a short author bio and link to the original article or website. Let me know if you'd like to share something, and consider adding Modern Health Talk to your blogroll.

This is a great start to an article - but i was wondering where the clincher/twist is. I have paid alot of attention to the development of these types of algorithms especially the more powerful "predictive ones" - I am curious to know how you see the regulatory environment changing around this class of algorithm which starts to look more like a diagnostic test; which as we know is a PMA.

Hi John,

I couldn't agree with you more about the value of social bookmarking. I migrated my bookmarks from Delicious to Diigo a couple of years ago when Yahoo announced they were selling Delicious and it was unclear what would happen.

While I liked Delicious, I find Diigo has a lot of extra features that are quite useful. One of the most useful is the one which automatically bookmarks Tweets you favorite.

I will check out your bookmarks on Delicious (since I did keep my account open). I have also enjoyed reading your blog bposts on Healthworks Collective.

Interesting predictions John. I wonder if you for see any PHRs putting out better APIs to allow web/mobile apps to send data to them. For example similar to how WiThings BP cuff can send MIcrosoft Health Vault your data.
