What is Web 3.0?

There has been alot of debate about what Web 3.0 is and when it will arrive. In a post on ReadWriteWeb titled, Web 3.0 or Not, There is Something Different About 2009, the debate continues. Also see the embedded slideshare. Some important trends in 2009 are:

Open data
Structured data -> smarter
Filtering content
Real-time
Personalization
Mobile (location-based, so you could say that’s smarter use of data too)
Internet of Things (the Web in real-world objects).

Linked data and Google snippets are noted as part of the trend. It sounds like mashups, web services and physical world integration are leading to a defacto Web 2.0 world. The implications for Health 2.0 will be the topic of a future post.

Call for Papers – Web 2.0 and Web 3.0

Recently I came across two calls for papers. The first from the Journal of Medical Internet Research for a special issue on Medicine 2.0 with the lofty title, “How social networking and Web 2.0 technologies revolutionize health care, wellness, clinical medicine and biomedical research.” Some examples they are looking for include:

Collaborative Filtering and recommender technologies
Consumer empowerment
Personal health records and Web 2.0
New models of academic / scholarly publishing and peer review, e.g. what is the role of blogs and wikis?
New models of e-learning.

Second is a Web 3.0 conference, “ 2008 International Conference on Semantic Web and Web Services.” This is sponsored by a European/International group, HoIP (Healthcare over the Internet Protocol). More about this group in a future post. This conference will include topics such as:

Semantic interoperability
Machine learning approaches for semantic web
Semantic web for e-Business and e-Learning
Trust networks on semantic web
Database technologies for semantic web
Semantic knowledge portals
Semantic web mining

Both opportunities reflect the growth interest in Web 2.0 and the Semantic web in health care. Everyone is encouraged to participate – isn’t that what Web 2-3 are all about?

Web 2.0, 3.0 and beyond

From Minding the Planet, there is an unique graph of the historic and future progression from Web 1.0 to Web 4.0. It helps to categorize some of the current and yet to come trends in the field, such as Software as a service, semantic search and intelligent agents. While not trying to be comprehensive the diagram is missing Service Oriented Architecture. Perhaps Spivak will enhance the figure with time. But in its current state, it is still a useful tool for educating the IT masses about future trends.

Web 3.0 – Hype or Reality

Now that the concept of Web 2.0 has been around for a while (in internet time), there is a growing buzz about 3.0. The Web 3.0 blog delivers a manifesto on the next level – the semantic web where Artificial Intelligence agents go beyond Web Services “…with the help of artificial intelligence and the integration of The Human Computing Layer, will allow us to cooperatively solve a class of problems normally reserved for specialized applications found in the areas of complex pattern recognition and high level semantic analysis.”

Heady stuff. Yet worth considering for healthcare. Intelligent agents and semantics (or taxonomy) is essential in taking ehealth to the next level. With all the advantages of Web 2.0 tagging and social networks, the volume of data is exploding and we need agents to semantically organize our knowledge whether it is about a personal illness or condition or one we are research a treatment for.
