September 12, 2007
According to Blogoscoped. No reason yet and how will this affect Google Health which he has led up to this point?

In the New York Times today there is a major article on the health initiatives of these two tech monsters. Titled “Google and Microsoft Look to Change Health care”, the article quotes Adam Bosworth(Google), John D. Halamka (Harvard Medical School) and Steve Shihadeh (Microsoft) on the initiatives.
For Google’s part the author notes seeing screen shots of Google Health with its extensive health profile pages. These are now posted on an unofficial Google site. Microsoft is less forthcoming but the purchases like Medstory, and their “Knowledge Driven Health care” give a pretty good glimpse.

Roni Zeiger, MD, of Google, Inc., wrote a significant post a few days ago from a physician’s perspective within Google on where things may be headed. Without using the word empowerment, Roni says, “But better-informed patients recover faster, manage chronic illnesses better and may even avoid some illnesses altogether. And patients should feel in control of their situation.”
Here are some of his thoughts on PHRs: “you should be able to enter as much or as little information as you want — and it’s important that you be allowed to access this kind of information without entering your name, insurance number or other personal information. We also think that if you want to save this information, you should have that choice so you can access it later or share it with your doctor.”
So both access to information and control of your own information is key to empowerment.
Many are questioning Google as a repository for personal health information. Let’s wait and see what they come up with – sounds like in this case they may be avoiding the advertising base that is more pervasive in their other applications.
Then today, an announcement from Missy Krasner on the Google Advisory Board on health. An interesting mix of national leaders in health care and health IT including Toby Cosgrove, MD, of the Cleveland Clinic, Paul Tang, CMIO of Palo Alto Medical Center (Google’s neighbor), Dean Ornish, Bernadine Healy and the list goes on.

The e-Care Management Blog has a major article on Google Health. Reviewing all the Adam Bosworth has said over the past months, Vince Kuraitis addresses:
- The Current Market Structure for Personal Health Information (PHI)
- Google Health’s Anticipated Technology Model
- Three Leverage Points
- Google Health Will Be Disruptive
He concludes “The basic problem is that your PHI is 1) scattered everywhere, and 2) not in suitable, standardized formats. The GH technology model and business model offer solutions to both of these problems.”
Worth reading and then wait and see what Google really does.

On the Official Google Blog, Adam Bosworth gives us a summary and the full text of his presentation to AMIA on “Putting Health Into Patient’s Hands – Consumerism in Health Care.” He structured the talk around discovery (search), action (personalize services – Health URL), and community (groups organized around conditions). He refers to PHW, Personal Health and Wellness Data, as something patients should own and share with providers selectively. He also refers to how “Consumers can organize into communities which are protected from inappropriate commercial exploitation” while rating their providers and retaining some anonymity.
He concludes with how to make this a reality – more on this later.
Does this mean that his vision is solidifying and will be released as a beta soon?

March 30, 2007
In the Official Google Blog yesterday, Adam Bosworth, CEO of Google, wrote at length about “How do you know you are getting the best care possible.” He addresses several important questions and admits to some of the limitations of Google’s current search results:
- How do I know if the information is trustworthy and reliable?
- Am I getting the best standard of care?
- Who is the best doctor or institution for you?
On the first point, he states, “we can do better at making this kind of labeling noticeable and your ideas on how we could make it clear to you that a site is medically reliable or trustworthy.”
The best standard of care issue is his real passion – he notes that even finding guidelines for treating a specific condition is a challenge but is essential to good care.
Address the best doctor question, he admits that rating physicians is not the same a rating food, perhaps a reference to the growing number of provider rating sites.
His posting is a good summary of the limitations of the current status of internet health information. I would welcome Google’s willingness to “do better” and help find solutions beyond the intial Google Coop effort.
Google Health – Adam Bosworth’s latest Speech
December 13, 2006
Adam Bosworth, VP of Google spoke at the recent Connecting Americans to Their Health Care conference. In his two posts on Google Blog, he discusses his thoughts on health care including a link to his speech. That speech is worth the read – it is both personal (his experience with his mother’s cancer) and technical, proposing the use of Google Coop for healthcare information but also a link to one’s consolidated personal health information from various sources. The concept is a health URL which each person would have as a personal portal. He states, “As Google has explored this issue over the past year and we have spoken to leading health providers and institutions from coast to coast, we have heard people say that it is too hard to build consistent standards and to define interoperable ways to move the information. It is not!”
It is great to hear his confidence and willingness to talk to health care leaders but also lead the way to interoperability.
